Dr. Kendra, also known as your OB/GYN next door is not only a successful OBGYN, but she is co-author of an amazon best selling book, and has a heart for mentorship. She is living a true balancing act, but somehow manages to make it all work, which gives me inspiration to do the same. She took time out of a busy day in clinic to drop a few gems and mainly let you know that she is available to answer questions, provide encouragement, and be a mentor!

What do you love most about being an OBGYN?

Learning from my patients about life, career, motherhood and marriage. I also love to teach my patients about their own health. To empower them to take charge of it.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

It varies; that is one of my favorite things about being an OB/GYN. One day I can be in the office, another in the hospital, or operating room

What tips do you have for fourth year OBGYN applicants going into interview season?

Be yourself. Remember this is a matching process. You are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.

The OBGYN specialty is getting more and more competitive each year. How did you deal with stress and pressure to be competitive during medical school?

I am a unique situation. I did not know I wanted to be an ob/gyn until 4th year after I delivered my first baby. So I did not feel the pressure until I went on the interview trail for residency. It was then speaking with other applicants where I found out that they did sub I’s, surgical electives, and research in women’s health.

Tell us about the book you co-authored “The Chronicles of Women in White Coats” and why we should read it!

This is a must read! It’s like having 20 different mentors. Medicine is like a secret society. We all go through challenges that we don’t share, talk about it; we just move on. This book will confirm that you aren’t the only one that failed, had an illness, experienced self-doubt. I was excited to share my story regarding career change, and the fear of taking that LEAP of faith. I was a non-traditional medical student; being older I already had a career and now I’m going back to school?? Check out the book to learn more!

What are some of your hobbies outside of work and how do you make time for them as an OBGYN?

I love fashion, and I fight for time to spend with my husband. Saying no and setting boundaries is important. Being a physician is more than a 9 to 5, so setting priorities is vital.

What is your life’s mantra?

Why not I?
– ME
